"The Early Years" |
Chairs and Cares and Other
Dares
(Listen
to the poem in RealAudio G2)
I never could sit in a chair properly
Always falling in a ring of fire,
Never finding the right seat.
It seems I'm all alone
In your circle of tears and fears
and jeers,
But I never could sit in a chair
properly.
I knew rocking chairs and nursery
rhymes,
I learned the ABC's like a good child,
I even knew when to smile,
But, I never could sit in a chair
properly.
Later I learned to say "no" when
I meant yes,
That the rich never had to confess,
That angels never got blessed,
But, I never could learn
To sit in a chair properly.
Laughing always seemed better than
crying it off,
Truth looked better when wrapped
in layers of cloth,
So I dressed myself up if it wasn't,
But I never could sit in a chair,
properly.
So bring on your doctors to
Patch up the bruises after each fall;
Bring on your carpenters
To build me new chairs -
I'll stand and wait,
Someday you'll learn,
(Maybe I'll learn)
I don't give a damn
About your dares to care about
chairs.
