Invitation
(Listen
to the poem in RealAudio G2)
Come in from the cold.
You've been wandering suicide streets too long.
Lay down the dull razor blades, placebo Seconals and frayed ropes you clutched trying to dodge the real killers. My eyes hurt seeing fear wrinkles cutting into your mind. Come closer. I will peel them off like onion skins...turning away sometimes so you can't see me cry.
You've been trying
to nurture pearls; the glazed look in your eyes betrays you. You should have
cleaned the sand out when it was first kicked in.
Don't squirm so much as you change out of those ragged clothes. Martyring for no cause has thinned you down to bones. You've worn those clothes as a badge of honor when they were really bandages of self-pity.
Don't be surprised as
I hold the mirror in front of you now. See for yourself what I saw under
all the garbage.
Now, if you want, you may go. But I'd rather that you stayed.
