"The Early Years" |
Selected Short Untitled Verse
Because
I carelessly
nipped a spring bud
crushed it in my
hands
Leaves won't grow
this summer
Sun
crack the shell
of night gently
It has been sweet
and I fear to wake
Rain is
fine
But thunderstorms are
better
They're louder and they're
darker
But best of all, they're
wetter
.
.
.
.
sometimes I wonder
what myth
I've made of you
your eyes, words and
body
are real enough
yet what
have I subtracted
from the person
of your miracle
I go up and down
like a bucket
in a covered well
seeing light
only when you want
water
the mystery of this
dark
is not what it hides
or why you draw
water
but why there is
light
I've seen too many
flowers
grow up through sidewalk
cracks
to ever believe
in concrete
lake swims
in miasma
of emeralds,
sapphires
pretend rainbow
of motor oil, gas
floats on surface
