Closing the Door

you call me "love"
but if you had ever really talked to me
instead of just putting your words into my mouth
you would know a lot of things

you would know
of my desolation
when I finally knew for sure
you would not love me
as I needed

you would know
how painful the loneliness has been
even when you are around

you would know
how it felt to drown
as I constantly morphed
to match your moods
till I did not recognize myself
slipped into a coma
and became your robot

you would know
how hard it has been to endure
and the strength I had to find
for the children
to hold myself in one piece

you would know
that living with you
is like walking on a minefield
-- I have no limbs left

you would know
how much I cried
when you finally broke me
something I swore no-one would ever do

you would know
my infinite sadness
as you crushed my love

you would know
how it felt when I lost my poetry
and could not find it

even if I let you read this
you have no music in your soul
and could not understand

as I awaken from that long, dark sleep
your love is a flat line
the bed grown cold
