"The WomanChild Papers"

Discovering the Warrior

moments
in which things weren't quite perfect
the veneer hopelessly cracked
awkward, angry
things said and unsaid
the detritus
of the end

there is no longer
any pretense of amicability
all that's left
are naked attempts to wound

so it comes down to numbers,
lawyers, accountants, bankers
architects of separation
dismantling what's left of what we built
so little to salvage from the wreckage

slowly, the rage
boils to the surface
I feel strangely uncivil
with no regret or surprise
at the uncharacteristic emotion

the stone you threw last night
easily deflects
off the pocked, worn armour
your aim
now singularly ineffective
I pull back and remember
you have so little firepower
left in your arsenal

surveying the ruin
I sit atop the rockpile
amassed over the years
ammunition I've saved
knowing this time would come

my ire can subside
into amused indifference
in the end, all your bombastic, indignant noise
your arms flailing in misplaced self-righteousness
will be remembered as black instances
of twisted comedy
the ultimate mockery
of the destruction
you've wrought

I now use the tatters of the dreams
to manufacture
the perfect slingshot
our home's broken beams
now fashioned
into a catapult
for the choicest boulders
saved from the crushed foundation

you do not yet comprehend
the strength of my superior weaponry
or my petty desire
for you to force me to use them
(just dare me)

you remain clueless
about the warrior
you've created
and the fiercity
with which I will defend and protect
our children

I did not want a battle
but as the eve draws near
you will find me
ready - and deadly
