"Efflresence" by Shima PatelA Random Act of Kindness

the gods have a special lottery
no-one is supposed to know about
when they get bored with guiding
and thwarting troubled souls like mine
through dark days and even darker nights
they spin a giant wheel
where all our sorry names are etched
and grant the lucky winner
a random act of kindness

this time, my name came up
it was you they sent
through the cybersphere
to touch me in those near-dead places
fighting tooth and nail for life
to become my strength
share my pain, turn me around
and make me laugh again

my demons are an unusually pesky lot
we've battled long and hard
always ending in some kind of exhausted draw
I have survived, but not by much
but been given enough of life's riches
by my forgiving, mischievous angels
to remain tantalized and rooted
in this difficult art of living
despite the many times it would be much easier
to give up, succumb to the lures of the dark

I'm badly bloodied, eyes permanently bloodshot
from even deeper wounds that won't ever heal
I've been blessed with some very special friends
who've made my path a bearable road to walk

but never one like you
never, ever anyone like you
you have become my special dispensation
from the gods, their welcome
compensation — however belated
for the way their fierce winds have blown
my life into terrifying, dangerous places
heights of glory causing vertigo
depths too low for a sane mind to know

it was into this maelstrom
that you so unwittingly walked
sent by the benevolent forces
so delicately guiding my life
so far their one random act of kindness
in my fractured and tortured time on this planet

my fate is to know the extremes of light and dark
that I may learn to rejoice and despair
be forced write the words that touch so many
and strike them deeply
such that they are never the same again
some which anger, some which heal
some which make others understand
the true depths of passion and pain
to which only the purest unconditional love can take us
and the real beauty of this fragile life we lead

you are now my buffer of safety
between the unmentionable and laughable
the hysterical and the insane
the stupid and the tragic
the love and the pain
the beauty and the horror
the kindness and the cruelty
we share as human creatures
the peace you've brought me
finally gives me wisdom and strength

at first, I was amazed you didn't walk away
as so many others have, not capable of understanding
at other times — too many — I must distance myself
knowing I will crush more delicate souls
with the power and force of my spirit

now I know you aren't made like anyone else I've ever met
so I'm taking this random act of kindness
which has blessed and inspired me to new heights
to make you part of my destiny
give you a permanent place
in my life and heart, for now and ever

I think the gods are pleased
