"Litany of Scars - Notes to a Missing Lover"

"yes," I told the court
"I love both my mommy and daddy"
twisted/fidgeted
like I didn't know what was going on
broke crystal glasses in revenge
heightened the macabre with black make-up
read Poe regularly
got anorexia
nobody noticed
least of all me

grotesque joke of family portraits?!
I was supposed to smile?

fell sick
pernicious anemia
made me a pain in the ass
"give this girl some vegetables
dose her with liver"
shrouded with myths
ripping at endless seams
screamed "no one told me"
I was offered bubblegum

why so surprised
to find me comatose
time after time?
I was just trying to look
as dead as the rest of you
called me a malicious bitch
some said, "poor girl"

mostly they ran
while I cracked my skull
opening locked doors
forgot how to cry

just here to say
that I learned how to really laugh
shut off tinny voices
trying to imitate
